I don't have TV okay!

  • Well against all odds my Psalms illustrations continue to grow and I just finished number 50 today; in fact I’m almost a whole week ahead of schedule. However when we were initially told that we’d be illustrating all 150 Psalms and including 4 promises about God and journal entries in each one that seemed like just a lot of busy work to me and I secretly immediately started thinking of ways I could sort of half-ass it and still get credit. However I’d bought a fancy Moleskin sketchbook and art supplies so I decided that I would put the effort in until it got tiresome and before I knew it I was spending 3 hours on my free day illustrating my Psalms book, listening the iPod and loving it.

  • Something I’ve noticed is that all kids know how to dance, when you put music on you don’t even have to tell them to start, they just go for it. Somewhere along the way though we get self conscience, embarrassed and ashamed; you couldn’t pay us to get on a dance floor. God created us to be creative and He loves when we’re creative; He loves anything we scribble down for Him. I don’t know exactly when I first felt like I was a terrible artist but I do know that I hadn’t drawn a picture until I (at age 26) started working with the fine boys & girls of Soquel Elementary, and I certainly never spent my free time outside of work drawing. It’s funny to me how the Psalms project, which I initially thought was going to be a huge chore, has actually turned into a relaxing form of therapy for me.

  • Something that was identified in the Bible study I participated in before I started my DTS was that one of the biggest obstacles between God and I was “passive obedience”. I would be obedient to God only if what I had to do made sense to me, if I didn’t understand why the Bible told me to do something I was whole lot less likely to obey it. I didn’t understand why we had to do the Psalms journal, it didn’t make sense to me and I didn’t see what the point of it was but I told myself I’d embrace all the rules of the DTS so I bought nice supplies in preparation and when I got the assignment I just gave it my best effort. Well I’m on over a 1/3 of the way done with the Psalms so far and I discovered it to be a huge blessing for me, and I’m guessing that God is trying to teach me a little more from this than I can have fun drawing pictures.
